Funds raised by the South Australian Games Appeal, via the Quarter Club and Premier’s Games Appeal Dinner are donated directly to the three Games organisations to help prepare and send athletes to Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games.
The Committee, Quarter Club and Premier’s Games Appeal Dinner are operated by the South Australian Olympic Council whom are audited annually by Ernst & Young.
Further to the contributions received by the three Games organisations the South Australian Games Appeal developed the Robert Gerard AO Emerging Athlete Development Fund in 2009 to help support emerging athletes in South Australia. The Fund provides financial assistance in the form of grants direct to athletes, priority is given to those competing in sports represented at Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games. The athlete is to be competing at Junior or Under 23 World Championship level or equivalent.
The Fund is managed by an independent board of Directors, and overseen by KPMG.
The first grants were distributed in 2010, since then over $100,000 has been distributed to over 50 South Australian athletes. We thank the South Australian Sports Institute for their involvement in this program, there considerable input is pivotal to the future success of the Fund.
We have strong evidence the fund has targeted the right athletes with 6 South Australians attending their first Olympics and 2 Paralympians debuting in London being recipients of a Robert Gerard Emerging Athlete grant. The number of athletes will increase considerably come Glasgow 2014 and Rio 2016.
